Gear Review: Leus Original Eco Poncho for Post-Surf Changing

Anyone who surfs the Surf Coast through winter knows the walk back to the car park is where the real suffering happens. That’s exactly where the Leus surf changing poncho earns its keep. We’ve been using the Original Eco Poncho after dawn patrols at Bells and Winkipop for the past month, and it’s changed how we get out of a wetsuit in a Torquay car park.

The poncho is made from a Turkish-cotton and recycled polyester blend, with each one using the equivalent of six recycled plastic bottles. It’s noticeably more absorbent than a regular towel wrapped around your waist, and the oversized hood means you can get changed with a bit of privacy even when the car park is packed on a weekend swell.

If you haven’t sorted your wetsuit yet, our Wetsuit Buying Guide is worth a read before you invest in a changing poncho, since the two go hand in hand for cold-water sessions. Once you’ve got the wetsuit sorted, the poncho is what makes the process of getting in and out of it bearable in a southerly wind.

Leus ships the poncho and matching beach towels direct from their Torquay warehouse via leustowels.com.au, and Surfcoast Surf Report readers can use the code THANKSLEGEND for 40% off at checkout.

Is the Leus Surf Changing Poncho Right for You?

If you surf year-round and you’re sick of hopping around on one leg trying to peel off a wetsuit while holding a towel in place, this is the piece of kit you didn’t know you needed. It’s bulkier to pack than a normal towel, so it suits car-park changing more than a backpack-and-walk-in setup, but for anyone doing the dawn patrol routine along the Surf Coast, the Leus surf changing poncho is a genuinely useful upgrade.
