Point Impossible delivered clean, classic longboard conditions for the 2026 Victorian Old Mal and Logger Titles, where more than 40 surfers showcased noseriding, flowing turns and traditional style.
Jack Norton claims two titles
Newcastle’s Jack Norton was the standout, winning both the Open Men’s and Under-45 Old Mal divisions. His polished campaign combined extended noserides with smooth carving turns—the blend of control and traditional technique judges reward in old-mal competition.
Ocean Grove’s Chad McLauchlan finished runner-up in the Open Men’s division, followed by Point Lonsdale’s Tim Edwards, Mornington Peninsula surfer Lachie Sandor and Torquay’s Matthew Shay.
Melanie Renton-Wright wins Open Women
Ocean Grove surfer Melanie Renton-Wright took the Open Women’s title ahead of Mitsy Igarashi, Kelly Goddard and Jax Goddard. Drop-knee turns and controlled backhand carves distinguished her performance in the clean Point Impossible walls.
Why Point Impossible worked
The break offered the kind of lined-up, user-friendly surf that allows traditional equipment to perform as intended. Rather than chasing explosive shortboard manoeuvres, competitors were judged on wave use, trim, footwork, noseriding and the smooth connection of turns.
SOUL Longboard Club president Lachy Fletcher described both the conditions and the standard as exceptional. With competitors travelling from around Australia, the event demonstrated the continuing strength of Victoria’s traditional longboard community.
Local significance
Point Impossible is a natural stage for this format. The event brought national-level surfers to the Surf Coast while giving Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale and Torquay riders prominent finishes. It also offered a counterpoint to high-performance contests: equipment history, style and flow remained at the centre of the judging.
