BALLITO, SOUTH AFRICA — 18 July 2026: Portugal’s Teresa Bonvalot and American Cole Houshmand opened the 2026/27 Challenger Series with statement victories at the Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill.
Houshmand owns Ballito again
Houshmand defeated Brazil’s Weslley Dantas in an all-goofy-foot men’s final, adding a second Ballito title to his 2023 victory. Dantas arrived with explosive aerial form and was chasing a maiden Challenger Series win, but Houshmand’s timing and familiarity with Willard Beach proved decisive.
The result gives the Californian an early surge in the five-event race for 2027 Championship Tour qualification and reinforces Ballito as one of his strongest competitive venues.
Bonvalot returns to the top step
Bonvalot beat compatriot Francisca Veselko in the women’s final, completing a strong Portuguese showing. It was Bonvalot’s first Challenger Series victory since the Sydney Surf Pro in 2022 and an important reset in the qualification campaign.
Her route through Finals Day included a semifinal win over Peru’s Sol Aguirre, while Ariane Ochoa rounded out a deep international women’s field with a third-place finish.
