The O’Neill Hyperfreak has held its position as one of the best-selling wetsuits of 2026, and spending time in the water in one makes it easy to understand the appeal. Priced from around $399, it sits in that mid-range sweet spot where surfers get genuine high-end features without paying flagship prices.
The suit is built around O’Neill’s Techno Butter neoprene, an unusually soft and stretchy rubber that noticeably cuts down on fatigue during long paddling sessions, with an even more flexible panel used through the arms to free up shoulder rotation. Seams are glued, blind-stitched and taped throughout, and O’Neill has skipped the smooth-skin chest panel found on warmer suits in favour of extra stretch across the torso.
On the plus side, the Hyperfreak is exceptionally flexible, light in the water, and comfortable enough to forget you’re wearing it during a long session. The seams sit flush against the skin and the range extends from a 3/2mm summer suit through to a hooded 5/4mm for winter swells. On the downside, that lack of a smooth-skin panel means it isn’t the warmest suit in its class, and a handful of surfers have reported the thinner panels showing wear sooner than a heavier, more reinforced suit would.
Who it suits: surfers who rate mobility above outright warmth. If you want a suit that disappears while you’re paddling and duck diving, the Hyperfreak is a strong pick for the cooler-but-not-freezing conditions we get along the Surf Coast for most of the year.
